My in sink erator model 444 hums (as if stuck) but makes no moving sounds and blades don't activate. Using supplied allen wrench from bottom or broom handle from top can move all parts easily but still no turning happening from switched on motor.
Reset button is flush not projecting. Thanks in advance!
Trout March 2008 My brother has 2 Insinkerators which wouldn't spin. Both turned freely with the wrench and via the inside (I used a wooden spoon for safety). Used a wet-vac to suck out anything - still no luck. In frustration, turned the units on and tapped firmly with a rubber mallet on the edge of the canister and got both to run! Guessing that the brushes in the motor were stuck and were in contact with the commutator. T Wubs January 2016 The insinkerator was humming but would not move Tried using the usual allen key. At first it was really tight to move.
But after some rotations the allen key started rotating relatvely freely but still not really freely. Googled about the problem somebody suggested on this site, using the same size hex key with drill machine and rotate really fast. Before trying that out I again used the allen key but this time did it really well and with real force and real fast as fast as I could and back and forth. Ultimately something got dislodged inside and freed the motor (without any visible or audible indication). Turned on the insinkerator which started working, Alhamd o lIllah (Praise be to God).
Nasir Hussain December 2015 I didn't think anything was stuck in mine either. I tried the allen wrench in the bottom with 5 or 6 revolutions, then hit the reset button. A popcorn kernel shot out when I started it! Everything works now! Thanks everyone! Jill June 2014 I found two coins in mine - one was easy to free but the other more difficult - you need a flashlight to peer into the unit from above to see the obstruction - I didn't think there was anything there but the allen spanner was facing a lot of resistance underneath and that was the giveaway I realised there had to be something causing the resistance so I looked more carefully - that was when I first saw the second coin inside jammed between the horizontal wheel holding the blades and the side wall: never give up! Thanks to you all for these helpful comments.
What did we all do before Google? Bill (Australia) May 2014 Fantastic posts, the one about the stuck penny led us to investigate further - there was a screw jammed.
Managed to dislodge the screw and now the InSinkEerator 200 is working again. I love the internet, google and sites like this! London January 2014 Great Posts thanks. I had the humming sound. Reset Didnt work, but Alan wrench did.
Just a few turns and all ok. Ben October 2013 Hey, the allen wrench worked for me, too! I did have to use the reset button and the allen wrench for quite a while. Ran lots of hot water. Several times, the unit seemed dead-no hum or sign of life. I unplugged, waited a short while, hit the reset button and the allen wrench again and again until unit rattled back to life.
I immediately put some food in the disposal (radishes and carrots-they needed to go anyway) to make sure it worked-and also to clear out whatever was causing the problem. Fixed it in about 20 minutes.
Be tenacious! Mary July 2013 The allen wrench needed to turn bottom is a 1/4 inch size. Mine turned (was not jammed on anything hard) but took effort. Once I turned it enough revolutions (5 or 6) to free up and allow the motor to start/turn it, I ran pinches of dishwasher soap and hot water through it numerous times to clean out whatever clog was inside the lower chamber. Now it turns freely, seemed to do the trick zip March 2013 My insinkerator does nothing, i flip the switch. The reset button is not protruding and it is not jammed. HELP Is it just dead sherry January 2013 I had the exact same issue.
The insinkerator 444 hummed loudly, but wouldn't spin. It did, however, spin freely when using an allen wrench on the bottom spindle. So, I turned it on, it started humming, and I spun the allen wrench real fast. It fired up and started grinding away. Erick January 2013 Allen wrench worked, thanks Wayne December 2012 I have a 333 but same thing. Thanks to the person above who found a penny jammed.I would never have thought to look for a penny, but guess what??? It was a penny!!
TGFG-Thank God for Google!! August 2012 For anyone else who might Google this in the future - mine sounded jammed but everything turned freely (multiple revolutions in both directions both from above by hand and from below with the allen wrench). I was also able to spin it in both directions using the phillips bit of my power drill (the hex bolt hole is deep enough that the bit inserted to the hex point, and a standard screwdriver drill bit is on a 6mm hex shaft). Still, when I tried to run it, it just hummed. I was running water down it and running the dishwasher during most of this. I'm not sure it's the safest thing I've ever done, but in a last-ditch-effort moment, I inserted the drill bit, powered on the insinkerator, and.then.
fired up the drill (in forward mode, not reverse mode!). Sure enough, after a moment I kind of felt it 'catch' and heard the disposal noise along with the drill noise. I let it run for a second while still running the drill, then turned off the disposal, then let go of the drill trigger. I'm not sure how long it will continue to work without needing another 'jump-start,' but for now, it's grinding once again. Kat August 2012 If you try the Allen key action and are unable to get the blades/impeller spinning freely and easily, try chucking the same size Allen bit into an electric drill and spinning in this manner. Run the drill in both forward and reverse and make sure the impeller spins freely in both directions (the impeller should continue spinning for awhile when you remove the drill if it's operating normally).
Because water and electricity are involved, I would recommend this task be performed with the disposer uninstalled and away from the sink/drain lines. I performed this action with the disposer upside down in a 5 gallon bucket. I used this method on my 10-year old Insinkerator 444 with success. In my case, I think it was a wooden clothespin that fell into the impeller. Not enough to stop it from being turned by hand (with considerable effort), but enough to prevent the motor from turning.
Mark July 2012 I have an Emerson 5-81 - tried the allen wrench w/hammer and it worked. It was humming and not turning. Ron October 2011 If the other solutions don't work, then I'd suggest trying this when the unit is humming and not rotating at all. In other words, if it looking like your only alternative is replacing the unit, which I was, then this may work for you too. Use a small, long shank blade screwdriver and scrap around the inside edge several times and run water between doing this. Use an allen wrench and tap it with a smaller hammer.
Do not hit it real hard, but instead hit it several to many times firmly. And keep doing '1.' This freed it up and it now works great. My model is 1-81. DROverton July 2011 Allen wrench in the hole and it works perfect again. I heard some kind of 'snap' like something stuck along the side was broken when I turned the wrench (must have broke whatever was causing it to be stuck), and then it turned freely.
Thanks for the help!! Mike May 2011 So excited - just figured out what the problem was on mine, and cleared it - There was a penny lodged on the inside wall of the disposal.
First knew there was a problem when there was terrible mechanical rattling sound. Then got the hum, and the reset button kept popping out. Initially, I kept turning the allen wrench on the bottom and hitting the reset button, and trying to see and feel what was causing the problem. Finally, I used a penlight, which allowed me to see better inside, and I realized that what I thought was a part of the disposal was actually a penny. The copper and design had been worn off, so it matched the color of the disposal exactly, and it was jammed in there, where the side meets the bottom, and under a protrusion in the wall of the disposal. I had my daughter keep turning the allen wrench, and eventually the coin moved enough that I could pop it out.
I hope this helps someone else. IMPORTANT: Be very careful to have the unit turned off before sticking your hand in there! Janet in AA May 2011 Ive had mine for five or so years. It also turns freely.
When I press the reset button and I switch it on and off quickly it starts making a different sort of humming sound it is at that point I leave it in the on position and let it run with the water flowing through it. Clears everything out and runs fine. Only one little problem I have to do this everytime I use it. I smell an electrical short in this one.I too splurged and got the 'Tim the tool man Taylor' more powerful 3/4 horse power. Oh well if this is the worst of my problems today I am a lucky guy. Good luck with yours!
Dan Tangeman April 2011 Don't be afraid of really torquing on the allen wrench to free the debris in the mechanism. Thanks dudes, You saved me $200.00 stan April 2011 stuck a allen key in the hole and wouldnt turn got some pliers and turned it and waaaalllllllllllllllllaaaaa it turned then reset and turned it on and saved myself the 175 bucks i was about to spend thanks to this site D Rich March 2011 I couldnt find the allen key but a screw driver did the job. I was able remove the clog.
Thanks for the info. Karthik March 2011 Worked for me!!! KPW February 2011 This is the power of the internet at work! Just assumed that my 444 had bought the farm and was ready to buy a new one but saw this post. Turning the motor using an allen wrench from the bottom (under the sink) of the unit freed up what ever was causing it to jam and brought it back to life! KJSWAY February 2011 used the allen wrench, pushed reset button WALA!! Works great.thanks so much for this site.you just saved me $200.00.
I am now taking my new disposal back!!! Yay!!: ) Gina February 2011 thank you so much anonemann! You're a genius! I was about to buy a new disposal and tried this - it worked!!
Hjackson January 2011 I want to say THANK YOU to anonemann, the wrench worked. Yesterday by accident to put a piece of bone that got wedge. When I told hubby he was not happy. However while he was at worked in 5 minutes I fixed it. Thanks to all who chats online, it save money and time. Tyler January 2011 Thank you so very, very much. One stop answers.
Had no clue I had a wrench to fit my disposal. What an easy fix!! Boys2cats3 December 2010 I have the 5-81 model that would hum, but not turn. I found the allen wrench in my tool box and was able to easily unlodge whatever was jammed in there. I didn't even know I had the wrench.
But thanks to this thread, we're back to business as usual in the kitchen! Laura November 2010 I went on line to look for a new disposal, found this site, tried the allen wrench, there was a slight catch at first, then I turned it in both directions. It now runs like new. Clif November 2010 After having the same problem.referred to earlier post by anonemann on April 2008.
PROBLEM SOLVED! I hope others have the same luck!
Myslc November 2010 Same problem as every one else. Hums, but won't turn intermittently.
Cleaned out the top, looks new. Allen wrench on the bottom both directions multiple ways working through every aspect of a full revolution. The level of resistance I feel when turning manually is even the full 360. It sometimes turns, sometimes hums. I fear the motor is going. Unit is over 5 years old.
Silkyd November 2010 Mine is a wierd problem, a screw has got jammed tight in the insinkerator and the allen key just doesn't work here.Help. I dont know what to do!! Sonya September 2010 Took mine off, found the black plastic drain tube cracked at the flank, allowing water to drip into the motor. Bought an Ace Hardware version (made by Emerson/Insinkerator) and will take this one apart, clean it up and repair it. Will go in the outside kitchen sink.
Kevin in Fountain Hills, Arizona September 2010 I have an in sink erator that was jammed, got it freed just fine, rotating the unit as well as removing waste pipe to clear from the bottom, unfortunatly it was jammed when I got the house, melted one of the wires running a jammed unit and there doesnt appear to be a tool made to take the bottom panel off to replace the wiring. Any thoughts? James August 2010 I found the 'screw bit flip in allen wrench slot' jump start method to work like a charm. I heard the blockage crunch and then clear, and the unit's back in business. Mine is a model 1-81 A, so the technique is a good first shot for all In-sinkerators before buying/installing a replacement MFMauceri June 2010 My solution was to remove unit, plug water outlet, pour in boiling water and let sit.then try to move rotor blades with a large screw driver from inside.eventually it turned and I kept working it.
Then drain and plug into outlet to check it out. It made a little noise at first then turned as if nothing was wrong. I re-installed and have not re-experienced the problem. I did notice small rubber grits that may have been wedged somewhere. Tony June 2010 darn. I tried what you all said.
Allen wrench moved 360 degrees freely. No obstructions inside the sink. Pressed the reset button. And still just a hum. Guess I'm luckier than most, though.this until came with the house which was built in 1991!!! Taylor June 2010 thank you - that worked perfectly!
Jon p May 2010 I think the answer to everyones problem is InSinkerator. When you replace, buy another brand. Thanks, Insinkerator-you really got us this time. Billy May 2010 Awesome, same problem with mine, solution worked like a charm, use gum on the end of a sick to get the pieces of glass out of there after unjamming with allen wrench. Thanks a ton!! Jim April 2010 I broke a small juice glass and it jammed my disposal resulting in a humming noise.I used the allen (hex head) wrench per the PDF below and was able to unjam it. Just twist wrench in both directions as needed to free up the obstruction. This is a super easy and effective solutuon and will save you a $200-$300 service call from a plumber.I don't ever try to fix anything myself and I was even able to do it.Just make sure and unplug before trying to remove the big pieces from inside the disposal.
Here is the PDF with instructions fromInsinkerator:Darren Bradford April 2010 Thanks for the help guys. We had a sterling silver Mickey charm wedged under one of the impellers. I was able to use the #6 alen wrench to stop the motion of the drum and un-wedge Mickey using a screwdriver from the sink.
Mickey's owner, unhappy. Mickey's owner's mom, very happy. Brad March 2010 The 'fix' worked!
I was about to call a plumber. I did not have the 'wrenchette' but used a larger sized wrench bit with my drill and the disposal now works. I am not sure what degree of tightness the thing in the middle should now have but I am leaving it as is since it works. Does it need to be tightened up again? Jennifer March 2010 Right on the mark! That is all it took. My InSinkErator is all of five years old, but same problem.
Found the wrench under the sink, got the insides to turn freely, and saved a few hours and lots of $$$ at Home Depot. Kip in Excelsior, MN March 2010 i spun it with the hex. I spun it with the drill.
It hums, but otherwise sits still. Gary March 2010 I have the same model, same problem, bought it 4-1/2yrs ago. Inspected and cleaned the inside, used the allen wrench and it rotates freely and easily. Quite a coincidence that it has a 4-yr warrenty.
'Planned replacement'? Won't replace it with the same manufacturer. Ed February 2010 I had the same problem that the garburator would only hum but not turn. My husband and I saw this web site and tried the allen wrench and it worked! Thank you so much for all the information. Maureen February 2010 We found the allen wrenchette that was included with the original paper work and fixed the insinkerator in less than 2 minutes.
Thanks to everyone for the posts. Dangerous Currents February 2010 I have the 5-81 model, had the same problem it hummed but the motor wouldn't rotate, a few quick rotations with the allen wrench freed the motor right up! Greg February 2010 I also used an allen key to turn the motor manually, I used a drill attachment though, saves the arm and a lot of time, worked like a charm and saved me $300. Mike January 2010 I had the same issue: first i put my hand in and turned it and it freed whatever was inside. But the problem came back and stayed. I googled and got this page, and thanks to y'all, it works again.
I used an allen wrench from the bottom and turned it until I got resistance. I turned the allen back and forth while running water and eventually it got easier (5-10 min. Back and forth). I think that whatever gets caught is small enough to pass through, but hard enough to cause a jam.
By going back and forth it seems to not only loosen the object, but possibly grind it down enough to let it slip through with water. Thanks to everyone. Long live cooperative learning =) Ryan January 2010 Can anyone tell me what works other than the wrench and re-set button. Wrench does not work like a charm either does the re-set button. Is it possible the brushes( if they have them) are worn out.
Have never been inside one but never seen an electric motor without them. Robert January 2010 Used the hex key. It was stiff at first but then went easy left and right. Plugged it back in and it worked as if nothing ever happened. Someone tossed in a pistachio shell and it jammed up somewhere. Don January 2010 Allen wrench worked!
Tony January 2010 Mine won't turn. Seems like the top is loose? Able to move it from top but wobbly. Nothing inside.
Still hums and red button at bottom can be pressed. Diane January 2010 Hi all - Here's a cool trick to conserve your elbow grease when spinning the 444 from below with the Alan wrench - I found a screwdriving bit for my hand drill whose shank (the non-screwdriving end) was just the right size to fit the hexagonal Alan wrenchable socket on the 444 (bottom center of the housing under the sink).
I loaded that bit backwards in my drill so that just enough of the hexagonal shank was exposed to engage the disposal unit, with the rest still gripped my my drill chuck (that's the part you tighten on the bit, not my drill's name). My drill is variable speed, so I started out very slowly (and of course with safety glasses) in case of meyhem. But all was fine and I gradually increased the speed until it was flying - spun great. Then I reversed the drill's direction (as if to remove a screw), and did it again. This all took less than a minute, and our 444 is happily munching our refuse like a champ! Thanks to everyone who posted solutions here - my wife and I were already shopping for a replacement when I found you guys! Andy in Seattle December 2009 Same model as everyone, happened across these posts just through Bing, thankfully.
Tried the reset before and it just hummed. Read the suggestions here and spun it a few times from above and it started working fine.
I did find two small pieces of hard plastic from something, no idea what in there. Solutions worked great, thanks again, was just about to spend the money for a replacement. Biggun November 2009 I tried everyone's suggestions about the allen wrench, found one that fit, gave it a few turns, same problem. What did finally work was turning it and turning it and turning it until it finally turned smoothly. I about wore my arm out, but it's Saturday night, and we won't have to pay overtime plumber wages.
Turns out there was a chunk of plastic in there, which neither of us could feel, but the disposall sure knew it was there. So, my advice is to keep at it, and don't get discouraged.
BBK November 2009 Mine wouldn't work. I purchaced the allen wrench specifically for this unit and it worked like a charm.
Thank you all for the advice. This happened a few years back and unfortunately I didn't know about this non expensive method. It cost me $130 to have a plumber come out, repair it and then tell me how simple it was. Bob November 2009 i have model 333 and i have same problem can u explan me how i fix the one.when i trun it on its give me on a small tone at the bottom mike October 2009 Mine is the Model 5-81.
Was planning to buy and install a new one. But thought I would try the Allen Wrench first.
Bought the one made specifically for InSink Erator's at Home Depot and worked it a bit. I was surprised to find that's all it took. $6.99 as opposed to several hundred $$.
And it was a fix I was able to amaze my husband with, since he is NOT a handyman. Easy job for a Ms. Foxytv October 2009 This worked like a charm. Most of all I remembered, where I put the allen wrench. Shreya September 2009 What unit replaces the 444 with minimum new plumbing? J.Recsei September 2009 Beautiful answers.
Just found my disposal Allen wrench and turned it. It wouldn't budge, so I DID have to apply a nice push - clockwise - that loosened the plate. The it started right up.
Thanks for the advice everyone - just saved me a call to the neighbor and embarrassment at my own lack of knowledge. Adam September 2009 Okay all - First of all I have the 5-81a or some model like that.but had the same problem as the 444 I guess. I tried the broomstick and the pole moving the blades in the sink counter-clockwise. Then I pushed the red reset button on the unit under the sink. Then I used the Allen wrench it came with (a size 6 if you don't still have the one it came with) at the bottom of the unit under the sink (as recommended here in someone's post) and moved it around back and forth a few times - THEN I pressed the red button et voila!
So, for me the key was to do the allen wrench thing and then press the red button. Jenna August 2009 I fixed mine today thanks to all your input. I used the wrench and turned it aprox one inch turn and back and it started right up after that. Nancy March 2009 i got the same problem. Been about 4 years and every once in a while i stick my hand in to get a rogue coconut shell, but other than that no problems until today. It worked yesterday, but today nada! I cleaned it all out by hand and besides food, i found 2 rubber bands!
I can make the plate spin freely by hand but still went bottom side to try the hex tool. That spins freely as well. So what gives? I got power cuz i hear the hum/buzz, but it wont turn. I really hate to fork out money for another unit, but if the life expectancy is 4 years regardless of model/price, so be it. Oliver March 2009 my sink erator also humed and took the advice from the answers above. It took me approx 30 seconds to fix the problem.
I turned the hex a fraction clockwise and it worked like a charm doug February 2009 Same here - had the unit about four years, it hums, there is nothing caught in the unit (I have cleaned it out by hand and have looked into it with a flashlight and have 'jump-started' it - see below), pressing the re-set button does nothing, it turns freely when using the allen wrench, and can be 'jump started' by simultaneously turning the allen wrench and turning the power on. Perhaps they did make a bunch of lemons. Mark In Houston February 2009 Same deal as below. It needed a jump start with an Allen Wrench. The only cool tidbit I can add is that home depot sells the actual tool that fits all in-sink-erator models.
It was $7 but it had a good angle to fit if your disposal is in a tight spot. Tom g December 2008 I have the Model 5-81 and had the same problem where the disposal hummed but didn't activate.
Using the allen wrench to turn the bottom worked like a charm! Richard November 2008 Humms. Not jammed and can be started from below with a twist from an allen wrench. Sounds and feels like it has full grinding strength once I start it.
Found this site while trying to find out if this motor has brushes. If yes easy fix, if not I'll buy a new one. Dominic November 2008 I'm having the same problem and i've been turning and turning, i can feel something stunk, I'm thinking maybe a dishcloth? What should i do next? B-nice October 2008 I had the same problem. Unit 5 yrs old. Nothing jammed, spins freely.
Reset breaker, motor just hums. I can get it going by turning it on and cranking the bottom with the allen key.Yep, just like an old car crank. Looks like the winding starter is gone. Cheaper to replace then fix.
Jimbo September 2008 Just fixed mine!! It worked the first time - but made a LOUD rattling noise. The second time, it made the noise again and stopped.
The third time - well, there wasn't ever a third time - until I fixed it!! I don't have a #6 hex tool, so I used a regular 1/4' hex wrench.
It worked great! I heard a very slight scratching noise in one small area of the rotation when I turned the wrench, but it never required any elbow grease (thank goodness!). After several turns to ensure it was not locking up, I flipped the switch. The noise was there for a fraction of a second and then gone. Hopefully, gone forever!! Due diligence, my friends. September 2008 hi everyone i was having the same problem with my unit.
I used the tool that came with the unit and it was getting stuck about every half turn so i put a little more force into the turn and it started turning freely again so i took my flashlight and looked into the top of the unit and found that my daughter had put a penny and a bandaid into it.lol once i removed them it worked like new again. I hope this helps you out. Wannabe hanyman August 2008 Yeah, I have the same symptoms. It spins freely either using an allen key or reaching inside. The motor engages but sounds like something is stuck in there. I was able to get it to work SOMETIMES by using a plunger at the same time as the dishwasher was draining.
Something has fallen inside, and passed the first blades and stuck internally. Funny how the motor shaft seems to have stuck, leaving the rest able to spin freely. Cussing like a plumber.
David blair Tahoe ca August 2008 I have no answer and have the exact same problem. My solution is to get under and start it with the allen wrench like and old time car engine. It is 4 years old as well and this seems to be a pretty standard problem across the board. Very disappointing.
JDM June 2008 more than likely you have something wedged in there.take the wrench provided with unit and turn it back nad forth untill it moves smoothly then put the power back to it and listen for the object rattling around in there simply remove it and it should be good to go i just fixed mine and found a small cotter key in it have no idea where that came from but unit is back to old self again good luck to who ever reads this Dave Schleicher June 2008 Mine died yesterday, after about 4 or 5 years of ownership. Same symptoms - it hums when I apply power, but I can turn it with the hex key. I found one online source for a new stator for $72, but I am debating just replacing the thing. I am extremely disappointed, having splurged on what should have been a top-of-the-line unit. John E May 2008 Yep same thing here. I bought it 4 and a half years ago and of course it has a 4 year warranty.
There is nothing in the sink, it drains fine, the blades all sping freely. It just hums when I turn it on. I think they made a bunch of lemons. I splurged and bought the 3/4 HP 'heavy duty' so it would last. Jokes on me and insinkerator is laughing all the way to the bank. That post on the 'fix' would have been helpful if he would have read the entire post and realized that it wasn't a problem with it being stuck. I am still looking for a solution.
In Sink Erator Model 1-81 Manual Download
Keeley April 2008 Odds are, you just need some simple servicing that anyone can do without a handyman. I just found this out myself, the hard way. Just make sure the sound you hear is in fact the sound of your disposal motor and not some crazy electrical noise- it's probably caught on something, and you'll need to help it along.
You'll need about a #6 hex drive / allen wrench (your mileage may vary) if you don't have the servicing wrench that should come with the disposal. First, as always with a disposal, grab a flashlight and visually inspect down the hole. If you see anything obvious holding things up, UNPLUG the disposal (or throw the breaker) and use some tongs or whatever you have to pull the item out. Start everything back up, and you should be good.
If that's not the case, remove the power, grab that wrench, and get ready to get under the sink. Turn off the disposal, and either throw the appropriate breaker or unplug the disposal if you can get to that.
At the bottom-center of the disposal unit (looking up from your undersink cabinet) is a single slot for your wrench. Try to turn this a few revolutions- if you're lucky, you'll feel it grate around as it pushes past whatever's hanging it up, and though it may take some elbow grease, you'll soon find it spins very freely compared to when you started. Make sure you can do a full 360 pretty easily- if you feel resistance at any point, so does the motor! Grind it out if you can. Remove the wrench, plug the power, run some water, et voila! You should be good to go. You can find these servicing details in the manual under 'user-maintenance instructions'.
Anonemann April 2008 Hmm I have the same model with the same problem. Worked fine one day and then did this the next. I am trying to determine which would be cheaper, to call a repairman or to buy a new one. Wendy April 2008 Geez o pete. This sounds exactly like mine.
It hums and turns just fine, but the water won't drain through it. I thought maybe I had an onion skin or something covering the drain, but have unplugged and turned everything manually and there doesn't seem to be anything stuck; acts more like it is just stopped up. Linda April 2008 Crud, I have the same problem with the identical unit. Is there anyone out there that has fixed this? Mine does not appear to have anything stuck, the hex wrench inserted in the bottom turns freely, and when i turn it, it also revolves the top disc.
It hums as though something is stuck in it. March 2008 Wish I had an answer, but actually I have the identical problem with the identical unit. Have you solved your problem yet? I'm considering installing a new unit and was on line trying to figure out if the plumbing connections on disposals are standard. I don't want to replace it with the same product, way too many bad reviews on line.

Replacement is pretty simple. Just remember to check for plastic plugs going from the disposer to the drain. (Don't ask me how I know. ) If you haven't done it before, it might take an hour or so with the proper tools. Open the box, look on the destruction sheet to find exactly what you need and get them while you are at the store.
I think we've all missed that step at least once. I've probably replaced over 100 disposals and I still have to remind myself to knock out the dishwasher plug As most have said, you're better off replacing than repairing. Here's a decent video on replacing. Skip to about 1:45 for the actual directions. The first part is about choosing a disposal.
